Brightkins Interactive Enrichment toys for Pets – Product Review

Brightkins Pets is all about interactive enrichment toys for pets and the children’s toy range, Learning Resources, is all about fun interactive learning. I love nothing more than interactive learning toys for both Kiki and Zamba as well as Gia. So when Brightkins asked us to collaborate and test out a few of their interactive enrichment toys we jumped for joy!

Brighkins interactive enrichment toys for pets

At Brightkins they believe that pets are part of the family, and well if you follow us on Instagram you will know that this statement resonates with us whole heartedly! Brightkins has the widest range of interactive enrichment toys I have ever come across. One of my favourite things about the pet interactive toys is that majority of them gets the entire family involved in the fun, which of course Gia loved too.

So here is what we received from Brightkins…

The Brightkins small Ice Cream treat dispenser for our little Kiki. Gia filled it up with Kiki’s favourite treats and enjoyed watching Kiki figure out how to flip it over in order to get the treats out. Because it is not a regular ball shape, it was a little more difficult for Kiki to figure out and required more patience from her.

The Brightkins Tough & Tumble treat dispenser for our big boy Zamba. It is tough enough for Zamba’s jaws but he figured out pretty quickly that rolling it and not biting it gets him more treats. Because it is a puffer fish shape it also rolls around irregularly which keeps things interesting. Both these treat dispensers could also be filled with kibble if your pup is a fast eater!

Brightkins tough and tumble treat dispenser

Next we got the Brightkins Cupcake Party treat puzzle, and oh what fun this one is! You can create three different levels of difficulty and watch which one your pup masters the best. The base of the cupcakes doubles up as a slow feeder too. Kiki was a keen learner with this one, because she has a short snout she soon worked out that using her paws got her the reward, whereas Zamba used his longer nose and strength to get to the treats.

Brightkins cupcake surprise

Next up is the super fun Brightkins Pupstrami Surprise treat puzzle. Not only is this one fun to look at with it being a giant pastrami interactive dog toy, but it has so many compartments to hide treats in. Kiki and Zamba had to master the art of only spinning one layer at a time! The hardest for them both was spinning the top ‘roll’ to get to the treats hidden in the ‘tomato’ layer. It was really fun to watch them work this one out, not to mention they kept at it for ages and ages. It was hard for Gia to watch them struggle to work out the different layers on this one but I explained to her that they need to work it out for themselves just like she works out her toys and things!

Last in the pet interactive toy range we received is the Brightkins Magic Trick training set. I will say that Gia absolutely loved this one! Not only did it feel like she was performing magic on Kiki and Zamba 😉 but both Kiki and Zamba were enthralled with what she was doing too! This set is the ideal way to have fun while training your pups. It teaches your pups to listen to cues and while some of the tricks require a bit more practice than others, this set is definitely something we will continue to use so Kiki, Zamba and Gia can master more tricks together!

Next in our set of goodies is something for Gia. The children’s learning toys are from Learning Resources and we received Max the Moose which promotes the use of fine motor skills. While Gia is a little advanced for this one she still loved creating colourful patterns on the horns of the Moose and what intrigued her the most was trying to fit all the pieces inside compartment of the moose!

Learning Resources Max the Moose

Then possibly one of my most favourite items for Gia right now- we received the Big Feelings Pineapple. Gia is turning five in May so feelings are a big thing for her right now… really big!! And this pineapple has been absolutely incredible as a way for her to express her feelings to us when she is struggling to put them into words. When Gia is feeling emotional and struggling to express exactly what she is feeling, she goes and fetches her pineapple. She sits and finds the face that expresses her feelings in that moment the most and she creates that face on her pineapple and hands it to us. We, mom and dad, are then able to chat about her feelings in a calm and more understanding way and resolve whatever it is that has been on her mind. I highly recommend this one!

Learning Resources Big Feelings Pineapple

When it comes to interactive dog toys and children’s learning toys, Brightkins Pets and Learning Resources is a cut far above the rest! Not only is the quality of every toy superb, they are colourful and very easy to clean. Brightkins Pets and Learning Resources have made themselves a name in my home so go and sniff them out online, whether you have pets or children or both, you will not regret purchasing anything from Brightkins and Learning Resources.

Zamba’s First Gotcha Day

It’s Zamba’s first Gotcha Day and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate our big baby bear in all his glory! In my biased opinion, there is nothing cuter than a Rottweiler puppy and wow Zamba was cute.

When we welcomed Zamba into our family a year ago today, we had recently lost our soul sister Zara. Zara was a Rottweiler too and she was the reason we knew we needed another needy Rottweiler in our lives. Zamba may have thought he had big paws to fill but it was important to us to let him know that he needed to just be himself and find his place within our family, which is of course was being needy but we wouldn’t change a thing!

Zamba's first Gotcha Day

When you look beyond Zamba’s big size and striking looks, you get to discover a giant teddy bear. A teddy bear that wants to kiss you for hours and run around the house squeaking one of his many many balls because balls are life!

So today we celebrate our bear Zamba.

Zamba’s LickiMat Birthday Treat

I am using the LickiMat brand for no other reason than it is what I had available to buy at the time of doing Zamba’s birthday prep! There are many amazing brands out there that offer similar things to fill and create birthday treats like the one I have prepared for Zamba.

Lickimat birthday dog treat

Ingredients

To create a filled LickiMat (or a brand of your choice) simply choose what your pup loves to eat. For Zamba I have chosen:

Raw chicken mince

Raw beef mince

Double cream plain yoghurt

Cottage cheese

Carrot rounds

Raw watermelon cut into shapes

Collagen Paws

Doggy treats and sprinkle to top it all

Plus some pet friendly peanut butter

Directions

To assemble and create your fun filled treat bowl, simply layer all your ingredients how you wish. I made balls of chicken mince and beef mince, I spread the yoghurt around the edges, I filled gaps with cottage cheese, I decorated with the carrots and watermelon then topped it all with star shaped doggy treats and drizzled pet friendly peanut butter over everything. Then I put it in the freezer over night. You can choose to either freeze the treat bowl or give it to your pup fresh- it is up to you and your pup 🙂

Easy Christmas Dog treats

In our home, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. We love to eat all the treats and get into all the festive feels by listening to Christmas songs and doing silly dances, taking Christmas photos in matching pyjamas and snuggling up to enjoy a few Christmas movies together and yes that includes Zara too.

While Christmas treats are a must have in our home, most of them are not dog friendly at all so to include Zara in our Christmas treats this year I have made these two really easy Christmas dog treat recipes which we hope your doggos will love too 🙂

Christmas dog treats

Frozen Beetroot Christmas treats

Ingredients

4 medium beetroots

Directions

Roast, boil or steam your peeled beetroot. Once cooked and soft blend them up into a smooth puree. Spoon the puree into silicone Christmas themed moulds and freeze over night. Pop them out the moulds and let your pups enjoy 1 or 2 at a time! Keep frozen.

Christmas Pancakes

Ingredients

2 eggs

1 cup milk

1.5 tbs melted butter

1 tsp vanilla

1.5 cups of flour (plain, wholemeal or oat)

1 tsp baking powder

Directions

Beat together eggs, milk, butter and vanilla. Then sift all the dry ingredients into the mixture. Beat or whisk until properly mixed. Heat a pan and you can either make giant pancakes and then use your Christmas cookie cutters to cut out the shapes or you can put your cookie cutters into the pan and pour the pancake batter into them. Once cooked allow them to cool before your pup enjoys them 🙂

Make a big batch and freeze them, take them out as and when you need them- allow to defrost before serving.

Christmas dog treats

These are two really quick and easy dog treat recipes (fit for humans too) because I know this time year can get really chaotic. We hope your furry loves enjoy their yummy Christmas treats as much as Zara does.

Merry Christmas everyone! Thank you for another year of enjoying our blog posts!

Zara Turns Five and We’re Having a Pawty

Today Zara turns five! I have no idea where five years have gone but what I do know is that the fluffy bundle of fun we brought home back then has grown up into the most beautiful, kind, loving and loyal soul I could ever have imagined.

Zara turns five

Zara truly is one of a kind and I’m not sure what I did in my previous life to deserve such a beautiful girl I get to love and who loves me back with her whole heart. I’m not complaining though 🙂 Zara fitted into our family from minute one! She knew she had found love and she knew she had found it good.

Fast forward to where we are today, and I could not be more proud of Zara! She put up with Oscar for the good part of 2 years. She’s shared her home with numerous bunnies, babies and all plus a pretty cool kitten who is almost a cat. But more importantly I am most proud of the way she has handled becoming a big sister to her tiny human Gia.

The relationship that Zara and Gia share is something unique. It’s also something I never had growing up so I am particularly in awe of how the two of them are together. Yes I grew up with loads of animals always around me, at family and friends homes but I tended to have the small critters in my home while I was younger. Zara is extremely tolerant of Gia, in fact Zara is extremely tolerant in general. I guess Oscar taught her that because he was forever putting her in her place- whether it was needed or not.

dog party

So today we celebrate Zara in the only way I know how and that’s by spoiling her with gifts, letting her eat all the cake and have lots and lots and lots of fun with her favourite humans US!

Zara’s Birthday Cake

Usually I make Zara’s birthday treats from scratch but this year something caught my eye.. The concept is awesome and the first of its kind to be available in South Africa so I thought let’s give it a try! The wolf & Women birthday pupcake. Not only does this make my life easier but I am pretty sure it is going to be one very tasty birthday cake fit for my Princess Zara.

Zara’s Spoils

Zara is not short of toys and things to play with so when it comes round to her birthday I always have a hard time finding that one gift that’s a little more special than the rest of her gifts. An obvious place to start looking was Amazon and oh boy did I find something awesome for her! This water obsessed pup is gong to have hours of fun with this gift and I am pretty sure her tiny human will join in too- just the way I love it 🙂

Zara’s Birthday Decor

No birthday celebration is complete without some special birthday decor. Of course I had to get a special 5 balloon plus some other cute balloons too. Zara is not a fan of balloons at all so they’re just there as decor. Happy birthday signs and party hats also go a long way!

The Best Dog Toys to Stuff

It’s winter and we all love a little extra to nibble on right. I have noticed Zara seems extra hungry lately and I have put it down to the colder temperatures.

Instead of just giving her extra treats to enjoy I wanted to give them meaning and make her work a little. So I went looking through her stash of goodies and these are her top five favourite toys she loves when stuffed with her favourite yummy extras.

Kong

The Kong is most famous of all the stuffers. It’s a favourite for most pups too. Zara loves a good old stuffed Kong! You can stuff pretty much anything inside, keep it fresh or freeze it. You decide!

My favourite stuffings for Zara are scrambled egg with grated cheese all layered up, yoghurt with fruit bits, mince meat cooked or raw just to name a few! There are LOADS of ideas.

Nook and Snoop Balls from Planet Dog

The Nook and Snoop ball combo is still one of the most challenging interactive/treat dispensing balls Zara has ever had! I love them both to be honest. When they are together Zara finds it extremely challenging to get them apart. I have to make sure I fill the bigger Snoop ball with something Zara REALLY loves to give her enough enthusiasm to make sure she gets that little Nook ball out!! You can use them separately too which I sometimes do. The Snoop ball is a great one for whole treats or kibbles, but you can also stuff it with yoghurt or cottage cheese. Zara loves the Nook ball with peanut butter stuffed inside it. I highly recommend this combo!

Flavorit Bones from Petqwerks

The ultimate chew toys are from Petqwerks. They are the only chews that have managed to live up to Zara and her powerful jaws! These flavorit bones are the original ones and I would recommend the Barbone Flavorit bones if you have a strong chewer. These are great because you can spread peanut butter over the indents. Zara licks them for ages! We have a 30% discount code for you if you want to spoil your pups with awesome Petqwerks toys: visit www.petqwerks.com code: ILOVESTYLISHPAWS30

Bionic Ball from Outward Hound

This little Bionic ball was Oscar’s and he loved it. The quality is great, it still looks like new after all these years! Oscar loved having his peanut butter smeared in this little ball. It has been passed down to Zara now and although it may be slightly small for her she still enjoys it. They do come in different sizes. It’s a great little ball to play with and to stuff! Smear peanut butter all around it or any other pet friendly spread. It’s a quick and easy one to do and still does the trick of entertaining.

K9 Connectables

The k9 Connectable toys are little gems. There is lots of nooks and crannies to hide things like blueberries or chopped up carrots etc. Choose what your pup loves to eat! I do try keep it mostly healthy but of course there are spoils with biltong and cheese hidden in these toys. They are a challenge to get apart but the challenge is worth the filling that’s waiting! There is also the choice of using the specifically designed k9 connectable treats which fit perfectly into the bone shaped indents.

Bonus Idea

Homemade Kong

For something completely different and completely edible for your pup, make a homemade kong.

De-core an apple and simply stuff it with peanut butter. Your pup can enjoy the entire thing! Zara loves these and I don’t give them to her often enough, that will change! You can opt to peel the apple if you have a fussy eater. Whatever works for you!
