How to keep your pets cool and comfortable in summer

Summer is in full swing for us and while we as a family absolutely love the summer months, the intense heat of our summer days can leave you feeling drained and Zara is not immune to this and neither is Ollie or the bunny girls.

Most dogs and pets in general can suffer from heat stroke really quickly and most pet owners know that heat stroke is no joke! I am very aware of how hot it gets for us and I am constantly making sure Zara, Ollie, the bunny girls and us stay cool and comfortable so we can enjoy our beautiful hot sunny days to the fullest.

So here are some tips and things I do to make sure we all stay cool during our hot summers.

Water Toys

Water toys in summer are an absolute must have! We have a few gems we found on Amazon and in the shops. Zara is a water goddess and loves nothing more than a water toy or shell pool to splash around in. She loves sprinkler toys and there are some fabulous ones available! Our latest water toy is her sprinkler pad which is great for Gia too. The two of them can sit for hours playing in the water together.

Cold Water + Ice Treats

Cold water and Ice treats are a must for all of us. You can make them interesting by adding fruits and veggies. The bunnies particularly love a fruity ice treat. I usually pop a blueberry, chopped strawberries or chopped carrots in each ice mould before filling it with water and freezing. Zara loves eating ice and it definitely helps in keeping her body temperature down. I also make sure she has a big ice block in her water bowl all afternoon so she has lovely cold water to drink. Ollie drinks Zara’s water too and I have noticed he quite enjoys it when its really cold. Of course you can make yummy frozen yoghurt treats and doggy ice cream too but on a hot day I find those can make Zara extra thirsty so I prefer fruit and water to be honest.

Frozen Water Bottle

When I know it’s going to get really hot I freeze a few full water bottles. Once frozen I wrap a small towel around them (to prevent ice-burn) and I give it to Ollie to lie next to for his afternoon nap. When the bunnies are really hot I give them one too.

Swimming

As you know Zara loves nothing more than swimming in the big pool. She’s a fish in a rottweiler body! This is the most effective way to cool her body temperature down fast, but not all dogs love to swim and that’s ok! Water toys are just as much fun and absolutely help in cooling down. Gia is learning to swim too so the two of them have great fun in the pool together.

Offer a Fan or AC

We have both fans and air-conditioning in all areas of the house, our summer is too hot not to have these things. Zara quite enjoys both! On extreme days I put the AC on and she takes up position right under it and enjoys her afternoon snooze. Ollie also enjoys the AC on a hot afternoon. Otherwise I put the fans on to circulate the air and this works well too.

Some Don’ts

I never let Zara sunbathe on extremely hot days. Our sun is too powerful and she gets really hot really quickly and ends up coming inside panting like she’s just been on a 5km walk! We also never walk Zara past 10am, even at that time our temperatures are getting high. We usually do early morning or late afternoon past 4pm or even later. We try not to run around and play too much during the hottest times of the days either and that’s why we have so many water toys- so we can still have plenty of fun while keeping cool even tho it’s roasting hot!

Will you be my Valentine?

No one likes to admit they enjoy celebrating Valentine’s Day… I will admit I love it! Whether it’s receiving a surprise delivery of roses and chocolates at the office or a romantic home cooked meal, every girl gets butterflies when her man says ‘I love you’ on Valentine’s Day!

I agree, love shouldn’t be bound to just one day of the year, but it’s awesome celebrating it on February 14th every year. Oscar of course has no idea when or what Valentine’s Day is, he truly shows me unconditional love everyday of the year. He wags his tail at me, he follows me everywhere, sleeps with me, cuddles on the couch with me, I even catch him staring at me with his big gorgeous eyes.

Yes, Valentine’s Day is a cliché, but who cares! Celebrate it!

Here are some ways to include your good looking pup in your Valentine’s Day celebrations…

Once the cookie hearts have cooled, mix together the icing ingredients and ice the hearts. Play around and be creative. Your pooch deserves some cute Valentine’s treats too 🙂 Let the icing dry/set, then let your pup enjoy his treats. Store them in an airtight container.

Memories are forever, and so are photographs! Create cute scenes with props and outfits and snap away. You will be surprised at just how much your furry love enjoys having his photo taken.

You can use blankets and pillows, anything pink, red, black or white. Make a cute bunting of hearts, ‘X’ and ‘O’. Use chalk boards and write cute little sayings. Have him hold a rose in his mouth or sprinkle some rose petals on him. Use Photo Booth props. Kiss him with bright red lipstick-he will definitely love you for that one! Be in the moment with your pooch and have fun together creating memories.

Keeping your pets cool in summer

Just like we need to keep our pets warm in winter, it is important that we keep our pets cool in summer. Oscar is prone to over heating so I have to be aware at all times and make sure he is kept cool on hot summer days. Dogs are prone to heat stroke because they don’t sweat like us humans do. They mainly cool themselves down by panting.

Here are a few ways I like to keep Oscar cool in summer:

paw I take him swimming. Oscar has his own little splash pool which he likes to sit in and cool off. Some dogs love to swim, so this is a great way for them to cool down. You can  also fill the splash pool with ice and see what your pooch does-I’m not sure oscar will enjoy this idea haha!

paw You can tie a wet bandana around your pooches neck. I like to soak it in ice cold water then tie it around Oscar’s neck. It works like a charm.

paw Because Oscar loves to laze around, his favourite spot is under the air-conditioner. If you don’t have an air-con, a fan will also do the trick.

paw If your furry love has a long thick coat, consider taking them to a groomer. The groomer can take care of the thick undercoat and make sure your pup feels the cool breeze. Beware when shaving your pups fur completely as this can cause them to get sunburnt. The top coat of your pet protects their skin from the sun as well as allows them to feel the cool breeze.

paw Your furry love can also get sun burnt in the same way we can. There are pet sun screens available so make use of them. Their nose and ears are particularly susceptible to sun burn, so apply a little sun screen to these areas if they are going to be exposed to the sun for a while.

paw Remember to exercise your furry love either in the early morning or late afternoon. NEVER walk your pooch during the heat of the day! When walking your pooch be sure that the pavements and other surfaces are not too hot as this will cause blisters and burns on your pups paws.

paw Make sure your furry love has access to clean iced water at all times. There is nothing more refreshing than drinking a glass of ice cold water on a hot summers day-give your pooch the same!

Most importantly, enjoy being outdoors and having fun with your furry love. Make summer memories you will never forget!
